Bradley Wiggins became Olympic Champion in
the time-trial on Wednesday, beating the German rider Tony Martin and his
fellow British rider Chris Froome.
The winner thus achieved a remarkable feat
that merits a place in history. Triumphing in the Tour de France before
becoming Olympic Champion, he rounds off a season in which he met all his
challenges: Paris-Nice, Tour de Romandie, and the Critérium du Dauphiné.
He thereby becomes the most medalled
British athlete in the history of the Olympics, having won seven in all. All
the previous ones were on the track, of which four were gold.
“Lord” Wiggins, as it will be if the
British public gets their way, handled the pressure superbly. In particular
from Tony Martin, who was leading at the first check. The German rider, injured
in the last Tour de France, proved that he was back in top condition.
Also convalescing, the Swiss rider Fabian
Cancellara was in 3rd place – an excellent performance – before falling back to
take 7th position at the finish. Having started rather cautiously, Wiggins and
Froome were then able to accelerate and finally stand together on the podium,
as they had done at the end of the Tour.
Particularly impressive was the gap
between Wiggins and Martin (42”), and the victor and Froome (1’08”)
